Bushwick Community High School Vision Statement

The vision of Bushwick Community High School (BCHS) is for students to become empowered for positive social transformation and liberation. We educate and inspire our students to positively transform themselves, their local communities and their world at large. Graduates of our school will be critical, analytical and independent thinkers. They will become lifelong learners who have an awareness of, as well as a dedication to, their own cultures and the cultures of others.

Educational Philosophy

Bushwick Community High School is a transfer high school that must do things differently or better than the traditional high schools where our students are coming from since they were not successful with our student population. As a result, we focus on first getting to know students by establishing close relationships with them and their family. That relationship begins at our orientations for both students and parents, and continues in the classroom setting. We have built in advisories and clubs to strengthen those relationships and ensure that students know adults well in the school, as well as their peers. In terms of instruction, we believe that students learn best by doing. Most of our students are visual and kinesthetic learners. Our instructional practices are focused on students working with peers to solve problems, and show how well they implement what was taught. In addition to this, we believe that students learn best when they are learning culturally relevant and responsive content. As a result, we ensure that our curricula are culturally relevant/responsive in all of our classes. This allows students to make personal connections between the content taught and their lives.
